California Accelerates Past 29% ZEV Sales, A Defining Moment for Clean Transport

California has once again raised the bar for clean transportation. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) made up a record 29.1% of all new car sales in Q3 2025, the highest share in state history.

Between July and September, Californians purchased 124,755 ZEVs, proving that momentum for clean mobility continues to surge, even in the face of federal resistance.

“This is unprecedented, nearly one in three new cars sold in California is a clean vehicle,” said Governor Newsom. “While others try to slow progress, we’re charging forward with innovation, cleaner air, and a stronger economy.”

With more than 2.46 million ZEVs now on California’s roads, the state remains the undisputed global leader in EV adoption. Electric vehicle sales alone hit a record 108,685 units this quarter, up nearly 30% from Q2. Drivers now have 146 ZEV models to choose from, compared to 105 just a year ago.

Infrastructure is keeping pace:

  • Over 200,000 public charging ports are now available statewide.

  • Nearly every Californian lives within 10 minutes of a fast charger.

  • New charger reliability standards and 1,000 Level 2 ports in affordable housing are setting new benchmarks for access and equity.

The California Energy Commission’s Nancy Skinner described it best:

“This is a defining moment for ZEV progress and a clear message to Washington, ZEVs are here to stay.”

The data backs it up.

  • Greenhouse gas emissions are down 20% since 2000.

  • State GDP has grown 78% over the same period.

  • Two thirds of California’s power now comes from clean energy sources.

At ZeroMission, we see California’s success as a blueprint for what’s possible when data, infrastructure, and policy align. It’s proof that fleet electrification, grid innovation, and economic growth can move in unison, not at odds.

As a California founded company helping fleets across North America and Europe transition to zero emission operations, we couldn’t be prouder of our home state’s leadership.

Smart data. Clean air. Stronger economies.
That’s the ZeroMission way, and California just showed the world what it looks like at scale.
